The word acropolis is derived from two ancient Greek words which together form and create the meaning of a city that lies on the highest ground. These were considered citadels that were built mostly on a hill and acted as a force of defense. Acropolis of Rhodes

A non-fortified acropolis that lies on the city’s highest point and has views to the west side of the island is the Acropolis of Rhodes. It dates back to the 2^nd and 3^rd century BC (Hellenistic period). Excavations are still in process to unearth this magnificent ancient city. The ancient city includes temples, underground tombs, a stadium and sanctuaries that are beautifully spread out in a verdant park in Monte Smith. In the Hellenistic stadium a number of athletic events would take place as part of the Haleion Games in honor of God, Helios. Next to that is a marble theatre, where musical performances are hosted even now. At the summit of the hill one can find the remnants of the Temple of Pythian Apollo, before admiring the breathtaking scenery at the top of Monte Smith.

Acropolis of Ialysos

Another ancient city along with an acropolis grace the hill of Filerimos. It is located on the south east part of Rhodes. Ialysos has been occupied by people from the Archaic and the Byzantine era, as well as by the Knights during the Medieval times. This site holds few of the most important ruins. Such as the impressive Doric amphiprostyle Temple of Athena Polias and a Doric fountain-house. Furthermore, there is also traces of the Church of the Knights. The two hexagonal chapels, a baptistery, Byzantine fortifications on the eastern side, and two more monasteries, one of which was restored in the last century by the Italians

Acropolis of Lindos

The acropolis of Lindos is one of the most grandiose monuments in Rhodes. It attracts thousands of visitors every year. The ruins of the medieval castle stand proudly with the coat of arms of the Knights still remaining intact on their surface, a reminder of different times. Close are the Doric Stoa that would reach as high as 87 meters in ancient times and the church of St. John, built in Byzantine times. This place’s splendor has remained the same over the course of history with the preserved marvelous temple of Athena offering a sacred and precious feeling. The endless open blue sea surrounding this settlement from the antiquity until now enchants everyone, who comes to admire this one of a kind man-made creation.
