Nikos Galis: The Modern Colossus of Rhodes

Rhodes is famous for several things and first of all for the “Kolossos of Rodos”. But very few know that from Rhodes is originated also the famous basketball player, Nikos Galis.
Nikolaos Georgalis (Greek: Νικόλαος Γεωργαλής; born July 23, 1957) commonly known as either Nikos Galis (Greek: Νίκος Γκάλης), or Nick Galis, is a Greek former professional basketball player. His family has migrated in Usa and they changed their name from Georgalis in Galis. His is originated from a small village named Agios Isidoros (Αγιος Ισίδωρος). Galis who during his playing days was nicknamed, “Nick The Greek”, “The Gangster”, and “The Iron Man” is widely regarded as Europe’s greatest scorer to ever play the game, and as one of the all-time greatest players in FIBA international basketball history. In 1991, Galis was named one of FIBA’s 50 Greatest Players. In 2007, he became an inaugural member of the FIBA Hall of Fame. In 2008, he was chosen as one of the 50 Greatest EuroLeague Contributors. In 2017, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In 2023 had the honor to see his jersey #4 ritired by the Hellenic National Basketball team.
As a token of appreciation for his contribution to Hellenic sport, Galis was chosen to be the first torch bearer, in the final round of the Olympic Flame, for the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics. Galis entered the stadium at the conclusion of the Opening Ceremony, and set off the procession of the flame to the altar.

Kallipateira of Rhodes

Kallipateira (Καλλιπάτειρα) of Ialysos in Rhodes came from a renowned family of athletes in Ancient Greece, “The Diagorides”. She was caught attending the ancient Olympic Games disguised as a male trainer. Her capture led to a law being introduced that trainers should strip before entering the stadium.

Kallipateira was a grandaughter of Damagetos, king of Ialysos. Her father, Diagoras of Rhodes, was a celebrated boxer and one of the most famous Olympic winners. Diagoras won the boxing at several Olympic and Panhellenic games and was honoured by Pindar. Her brothers were also Olympic and Panhellenic champions: Damagetos won pankration events and Akousilaos won in boxing. Her younger brother Dorieus was the most successful, winning the pankration at 21 different Panhellenic games.

Kallipateira was a widow at the time of her arrest at Olympia, which she was attending in support of her own son Peisirodos.

Even if the law didn’t change, Kallipateira became a symbol of all women – mother in Greece and she is a panhellenic legend.

Leonidas from Rhodes

Leonidas of Rhodes is one of the wrongdoers of history. Although he was a model athlete with unique achievements in his career, yet few know him. Leonidas was born on the island of Rhodes in the 2nd century BC. He was a runner in all three events of the time, the stadion, the track (diaulos) and the hoplite road. He emerged as a triathlete, after he managed to finish first in all three sports on the same day. He repeated this achievement in 4 consecutive Olympiads, the 154th, the 155th, 156th and 157th Olympiad. Precisely because of these victories, he emerged as the most victorious athlete in the history of the ancient Olympic games. Philostratos the Athenian, in his report “Gymnastikos”, analyzes further the achievement of Leonidas, explaining that the three sports in which he excelled required completely different physical characteristics. The stadion and the diaulos, foot races of some 200 and 400 meters respectively, were best suited to sprinters, while the hoplitodromos (a diaulos performed with bronze armor and shield) required more muscular strength and endurance. How difficult and unique his achievement was is proven to be unprecedented in human history as his total of victories was surpassed after 2,168 years in modern Olympic games by American swimmer Michael Phelps in 2016, who won his 13th Olympic medal of Rio de Janeiro.
